campfire T’was the week before Halloween,

And at Picnic Point,

All the members of Rise

Were rockin’ the joint!

Song were being sung,

S’mores toasted with care,

As the young adults watched

the flames rise in the air.

**************************************

We will meet at church at 7 p.m. (where the parking ramp will be open) and then carpool over to Picnic Point. At Fire Circle #1, we will build our campfire, have a short devotion, make s’mores, and sing our favorite songs with musical accompaniment. We’ll pack up and leave by a quarter to nine to make sure we can get our cars out of the ramp.

There is no need to RSVP; just show up at the church by 7 p.m. to catch the carpool. Please wear closed-toe shoes and tie back long hair — safety first, of course. :-) All you need to bring is a willing spirit and maybe the name of a song or two you would like to sing — sacred and secular music are both welcome.

September 26: Movie Night!

Join us at FUMC Madison (203 Wisconsin Ave., Madison, WI) at 7:00 p.m. in room LL07 (the youth room, on the lower level).

We will be watching and discussing The Pursuit of Happyness with Will Smith.

Pursuit of Happyness poster According to Internet Movie Database (imdb.com):

“In 1981, Chris Gardner was a struggling salesman in little needed medical bone density scanners while his wife toiled in double shifts to support the family including their young son, Christopher. In the face of this difficult life, Chris has the desperate inspiration to try for a stockbroker internship where one in twenty has a chance of a lucrative full time career. Even when his wife leaves him because of this choice, Chris clings to this dream with his son even when the odds become more daunting by the day. Together, father and son struggle through homelessness, jail time, tax seizure and the overall punishing despair in a quest that would make Gardner a respected millionaire. Written by Kenneth Chisholm (kchishol@rogers.com)

There will be snacks to share and discussion of the movie, as well as some talk about our new format and plans for the fall. We hope to see you there!

Who are we?

We are a group of young adults of First Church. That is…

  • no fixed age, but roughly after undergrad and before children (20s-30s)
  • members and friends of First United Methodist Church in Madison, WI
  • people looking for connections and community in the midst of busy lives

Like the church building itself, the young adult group is undergoing some structural changes. We are trying to adapt our ministry to the needs and lifestyles of those who would like to be part of this group. We’ve been listening, and this is what we have heard so far:

  • Every week is probably too much…
  • But many people really want to continue meeting.
  • Some folks especially want fellowship,
  • And some are looking for spiritual growth.
  • Most of us like some variety, and
  • Everybody likes snacks. :-)

Grand Opening

Beginning in September, YA is going to meet monthly on the fourth Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. downstairs in the new youth room. We plan to rotate leaders and snack-bringers. The program for the night will be up to the leaders, but we have lots of ideas to share. It could be a movie/TV show/music and conversation, or a topic (or guest speaker) for discussion, a service project, an outdoor activity and devotion, a traditional reading and lesson, a seasonal event, or just about anything else!

Fall Lineup

Here are our plans for the upcoming fall semester. Look for more details as each event approaches.
